FTSE
Global Classification System
FTSE is an independent company owned by The Financial Times and the
London Stock Exchange. It's sole business is the creation and management
of indices and associated data services, on an international scale.
Since its inception in 1995 FTSE has grown from a UK start-up to a
global operation with eleven offices worldwide. The group encompasses
offices in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific. FTSE is
now calculating indices and servicing clients in over 77 countries.
It is estimated that two and a half trillion USD of assets are under
management using FTSE indices.
The Global Classifiaction System is an idiosyncratic method
for categorizing economic/industrial activities. The FTSE taxonomy
provides a comprehensive, detailed structure for sector analysis and
facilitates the comparison of companies within sectors, sub-sectors
and across national boundaries. The classification structure includes:
• 10 Industries help investors monitor broad industry
trends
• 18 Supersectors can be used for trading
• 39 Sectors provide the best investment management tool
• 104 Subsectors allow more detailed analysis
