Chapter
2: New Arrival
This chapter represents just over forty eight hours in time from
the moment Victor’s father leaves to his first day at University.
It covers Victor’s reaction to his new bedsit, which was
discovered by his new housemate but old friend Katie from his
Foundation course, who took it upon herself to choose the bedsit
for him. Victor describes how he feels about Katie’s outlandish
antics, his first impressions of fellow classmates, his tutors
and the course itself. He takes the reader through the evolving
dynamics after the first module “Summer Project” work
is put on the walls of the classroom, who he believes are allies
and who he identifies as potential enemies.
Victor’s role within the classroom dynamic is irreversibly
alterred after he is voted Student Rep by his fellow students
in the first year, an added responsibility he didn’t really
need. He has to sign up for his ID & NUS cards and collect
his grant.
The aim of the chapter is to introduce the majority of the other
characters and the setting. The reader finds out more about Victor’s
driving forces and potential antagonisms, therefore helping to
set up the conditions for Victor’s demise later
in the book.
This chapter is divided into six parts:
1) Living in substandard accomodation
2) Katie’s crazy world
3) That difficult first day at college
4) Presenting the classmates and tutors
5) The first ever critique and the subsequent aftermath
6) Campaigns, elections and victories in forty five minutes.
